Welcome to the community project Art to Sea!
The Heritage Lottery Fund has enabled the Friends of Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology to run an exciting community project that will involve and engage the community.
Maritime heritage will be brought to life through the comparison of historic and contemporary maritime related images. Historic images will be gathered through researching maritime and museum archives as well as through a call for historic maritime related images which you, the public, may hold. These will then be compared to contemporary images taken by project participants.
These images will also be used to provoke memories from the older generation, resulting in the collection and giving of oral history accounts by people from the local community, and forming a new oral archive. Talks, trips and workshops will add to the recollection of memories in some people as well as creating awareness of maritime archaeology and history in others.
The project will culminate in an exhibition of maritime memories by the participants using collected image comparisons of the same areas, and accompanying oral accounts where possible.
